Rx100 was extremely popular during the late 80s and early 90s. The bike was made extremely strong and rigid. The engine though 100cc only but behaved as if it was a 200cc. Power to weight was absolutely fantastic which made the bike do wheelie like a breeze. Bike was dual purpose as in if you rode carefully you got an average of 45 to 50 kmpl with its factory tires ie rear 2.75 & front 2.50. If you wanted to show off it was the best. The girls liked the boys with the mean machine aka Yamaha RX100. Mostly rich spoilt brats owned an RX100. The bikes used to be heavily modified and sported alloy wheels. The bike rarely broke down. Nobody cared that it was a 6volt bike. All mattered was high torque and pick up. The build quality was rock solid and felt stable during cornering. It was highly reliable and could take 2 riders easily. The sound packed with high power torque made it a craze among the youths.I was from a lower middle class family and had an atlas bicycle so it was a dream machine for me. By the time I started earning the legendary rx100 went out of production. I was very sad and I was now riding a 2004 model tvs Victor. It was a bike without a soul. I happened to see a guy who was willing to exchange my Victor for his Rx100. I rode the bike and found the engine needed reboring and chain replacement and painting. The chasis was stiff and perfect. The petrol tank was dented and rusting and everything was original. The bike was 1991 model. i immediately took the deal even though I knew lots of repair work was there. My parents and my wife did not like it saying victor was a better bike. I laughed in my heart and felt pity for these ignorant people. It was in 2007 when I bought this bike. I told my wife that a time will come and guys will be begging me to sell the bike for 1 lakh rupees. My wife laughed at me at that time. I cleaned the entire bike with coconut oil & kerosene mixed to remove rus on some places. Then cleaned with diesel. I cleaned the engine with diesel. The bike was responding well. The mileage it gave me was 47 kmpl with normal city use with stock tyre size which were narrow and pretty worn out. Except for the chassis, silencer and original bore I replaced all parts with new,rebored the engine and crank,spent approx 30000 rupees. New petrol tank, headlamp, new inducato, side covers, new original front and rear mudguards,new danger lights, new mirrors, halogen bulbs, converted to 12v from 6v. New front forks and hubs, new rear hubs, new splendor saree guard, new kicker, new side stand. Luckily I got everything original from the auto parts dealer at pondicherry Srinivasa Auto parts near Balaji Theatre. They specialise only Yamaha Rx100 spares. I wanted to keep everything stock original and in factory condition. The speedometer was original Escorts as supplied but I bought a new speedometer with YAMAHA written on that. It was my dream bike. i did manage to ride an rx100 during my college days for 6 months. It was my brother in laws bike and I used to maintain it well in immaculate condition that even the owner was surprised. Unfortunately that bike got stolen. Coming back to my bike I happened to meet a Yamaha specialist in my hometown of karaikal who worked only for passion and worked only when he was in the mood. I needed such a guy who was not a thief stealing original parts like oil pump and carburettor. The guy seems was trained by yamaha and did an exceptional job. He sleeps whole day and works all night with a pack of cigarettes. He loves his passion and extremely fond of Yamaha Rx100. His name is Ismael and he in his Forties. The bike is completely done. I changed new tyres to bigger size for stability and better grip. Front was Ceat Secura Zoom 2.75 18″ sports tyre and rear tyre Ceat Milaze 3.00 18″. The tyres are excellent giving exceptional grip on slippery roads and dusty roads. I made a good decision buying these tyres. Except for silencer I have completed all. I need to take the original silencer for chrome plating or electro plating. Below is my love and I really love the bike . It’s giving me 45kmpl on normal city riding though I was expecting 35 as it has the original Mikuni carburettor of Japan. Luckily original spares are available and constantly supplied by Yamaha Motor India. I feel the spares are a bit pricey but that’s where they make real money. I have no complaints as long as I get the original stuff for my bike. Now Rx100 has been made popular thanks to Tamil cinema. Most young stars use Rx100. Siva Karthikeyan mostly makes entry scenes in Rx100. In movie APPA the hero Samudrakani rode a black Rx100 for the entire movie. Rx100 is a star no doubt.
